Gebbie Press was founded by Conley Gebbie, former PR man for Shell Oil and Pan Am Airlines in New York City in 1955. His first directory was called the Gebbie Press House Magazine Directory, which listed companypublished magazines now they are called House Organs and was designed for freelance writers and photographers, who used it to find places to sell their stories and pictures to. His office was based on West 48th street in New York City. It was frequented by many writers and photographers because he had on display hung up by their corners along all the office walls a copy of nearly every House Magazine published at the time. In 1971, he sold that directory to the National Research Bureau in Burlington, Iowa. His next idea was to publish a directory of all the print and broadcast media in the United States. There were several companies who published guides to newspapers, lists of magazines and radio station directories, but no one had ever nor to this day have they organized all the media outlets in one compact volume. He called it the Gebbie Press AllInOne Media Directory, for obvious reasons. In 1974, just three years after the first edition, Con Gebbie died of cancer. His wife, Amalia Gebbie, former advertising manager at Bloomingdales in NYC, took over researching and publishing the directory. She too would pass away, leaving me.
