I was born and raised just outside of Vancouver, Washington. As a boy I spent a lot of time camping out and fishing at the local creeks and lakes. Thats where my appreciation of nature and wildlife began. I started painting when I was 10, using oil paints from a paintbynumber set on cardboard. While growing up, I was able to learn basic art theory through classes at various public schools and junior colleges. Later I studied at the Academy of Realist Art Seattle Fine Art Institute and with Regional artists Al Currey and Bart Rulon. After 45 years of painting, I still get excited when I put paint to canvas. I am still experimenting and discovering new things every time I paint. Thats what makes art so interesting. When I paint in the studio, my technique is to first make some simple sketches to layout the basic dark and light values and place the objects in a pleasing arrangement. Then, always working in oils, I start by applying an undercoat color over the entire canvas. When that is dry, I paint on a simple sketch in a neutral color. Then I start by laying in the basic colors of my subject or point of interest. After that, generally working from dark to light, I start scumbling in the background leaving a little of the undercoat showing through. Depending on what I am trying to accomplish, I may let a layer dry or work wet on wet. I finish by adding final details to the subject. I try to develope the entire painting all together as I progress, this helps keep the colors and values in the correct relationship and unifies the composition. I am also involved with helping to preserve wild animals and their habitat. Being involved is the only way to assure that protecting the wild things is not overlooked . We must continue to find ways for mankind and nature to coexist if our grandchildren are to enjoy the wonders of nature. Thats why I support associations like the Audubon Society, and the National Wildlife Federation. They are making a difference.
