Aboriginality has a single overarching objective: to spread the good news about Contemporary Australian Aboriginal Art, what art critic Robert Hughes has described as “the world’s last great art movement.” Part of the wonder of the recent revival of an ancient aboriginal visual culture, though, is that it is not one movement but many, each distinctive in spite of shared features. All of the regional centers that are producing art of high quality in various mediums have in common that rare imaginative capacity to make formal and even moral sense out of the apparent randomness of the world. Aboriginal peoples have been doing this for tens of thousands of years, and it is a privilege to be in the presence of such work and to share it with others. These works of art are both communal acts of resistance and collective acts of affirmation.
