Our first film in the threepart series Craftsmen of a Bygone Age is set in Germany’s Black Forest. In the early 1900‘s thousands of lumberjacks still worked in the timber industry. There were no roads on the inaccessable mountain slopes, making transport of the timber difficult and dangerous. So a gentle mountain stream became a gigantic waterchute on which logs hurtled to the valley and river far below. Here they were bound into gigantic rafts and ferried sometimes hundreds of miles. We have unique archive film material from the 1920‘s, we demonstrate what a waterchute does, or a raftsman, a resiner, a charcoal burner, as well as lumberjacks and woodsmen, trades and crafts rooted in the distand and Middle Ages.
